The coast in Nerja is wide and there are different beaches to choose, but definitely the Burriana and the Maro beaches are two gems worth to be discovered.
With different styles, the Burriana beach is located in east Nerja and it has an easy access. This one is the most popular not only among visitors but also among locals due to the wide range of activities availble in there: from sports to a huge variety of restaurants and cafés.
On the other side, the Maro beach is known to be one of the most beautiful of the area. This beach is ideal for those who just want to relax. This beach is 500 meters long and it is located in a small bay, surrounded by nature. Nontheless, those looking for adventures won’t be disappointed, either. This beach also offers sport activities such as kayaking, diving or snorkeling.
Visit the Nerja Caves (Cuevas de Nerja)
Visiting the Nerja Caves is a must on your visit to the area, and a perfect plan no matter the season. These caves were discovered in 1959 by chance by a group of teenagers from Maro. They didn’t know by that time that they had discovered one of the most important geological gems in Spain.
These caves hide on their inside the world’s largest column, which made them win its place in the Guinness Book of Records in 1989. It is also known to be the world’s oldest Neanderthal paintings, which nowadays are impossible to visit.
However, this cave is the perfect place to spend a few hours just walking by and discoveting this artistic and historic monument, which has been also recognised as Heritage Asset.
A day trip to Frigiliana and El Acebuchal
As we always say, Frigiliana is a MUST on your visit to the area. Its white houses and its mixure of ancient cultures are known worldwide. Frigiliana has been described many times as one of te most beautiful villages in Spain. Its narrow streets and white houses still remain our arabic and jewish past. There is A LOT that can be said about Frigiliana. But why not to come and discover it for yourself?
Frigiliana is just 10 minutes by car from Nerja and has an easy access. Just a walk among its streets early in the morning will fill you with peace and calm. We recommend to go early in the morning and enjoy also a breakfast in one of its coffee shops.
After your visit to Frigiliana, a visit to El Acebuchal will surprise even more. This small village is 20 minutes away from Frigiliana and the access is not that easy, BUT you will be surprised about what you will find there.
The lost village of El Acebuchal is one of those magical places where it seems like time has stood still. It is a small village abandoned during the Spanish Civil War rebuilt by a wonderful family. Antonio “El Zumbo” always dreamed of returning to his hometown and in 1998 he began to slowly rebuild it. Today the result is spectacular: its streets are lovely and the family of Antonio runs a restaurant and a rural house in this village. Antonio keeps improving El Acebuchal every day, and he loves to talk about its history to all visitors. Going to the acebuchal is like going back in time, getting lost in its streets is magical.
